Caprylic acid is a medium chain fatty acid. There are 8 carbons in its chain, so it is also called n-octanoic acid. Caprylic acid is considered an essential fatty acid, essential for proper functioning of the body. A lack of it can lead to problems with memory or concentration.

Caprylic acid chemical properties

Colorless oily liquid, solidified into flake crystals after cooling, slightly uncomfortable smell and burnt smell, and diluted into fruit aroma. Melting point 16.3 ℃, boiling point 240 ℃, refractive index (nD20) 1.4278. Slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water and most organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

Caprylic acid production method

Natural products exist in nutmeg, lemon grass, apple, coconut oil, wine, hops, etc. Octylic acid can be extracted from coconut oil by volatile fatty acid fractionation. Octanol is used as raw material in the industrial production of octanoic acid. During the preparation in the laboratory, n-hexylmalonic acid is used to heat and release carbon dioxide, and the pressure is reduced to 4-6.65kPa to make the reaction complete. Finally, the reaction product is distilled under reduced pressure, and the fraction at 127-129 ℃ (2.13 kPa) is collected to form octanoic acid. The yield is 80-85%. Octylic acid can be prepared from 1-octene and peracetic acid. In addition, n-octanol oxidative dehydrogenation method is also available.
