Magnesium oxide is naturally present in the mineral magnesite. Light magnesium oxide is white light and loose amorphous powder. It is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Light weight occupies about three times the volume of heavy magnesium oxide. Light magnesium oxide exposed to air is very easy to absorb water and carbon dioxide, insoluble in water and alcohol, can be dissolved in dilute acid to generate the corresponding magnesium salt solution.
1. Light magnesium oxide is used as alkaline diluent in solid formulations.
2. Light magnesium oxide is used as food additive and antacid agent, alone or in combination with aluminum hydroxide.
3. Light magnesium oxide is also used as osmotic light laxative and magnesium supplement in magnesium deficiency.
4. It is widely used in rubber, rubber sheet, rubber products, pharmaceutical industry, food industry.
Magnesium oxide naturally exists in the mineral periclase. It can be prepared by calcining the mineral magnesite or magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide can be obtained after treating seawater or salt water with lime water. The purification methods include crushing and screening, heavy medium separation and foam flotation.
