Theacrine (1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid) is a purine alkaloid found in the leaves of wild bitter tea (camelliakuchahung t.chang). Its molecular structure is one more methyl than the common caffeine in tea. It is precisely because there is one more methyl group than caffeine that matrine has completely different physiological functions and health care effects from caffeine, which has attracted extensive attention of scholars in the academic and pharmaceutical fields.
