Wintergreen Essential Oil description

Wintergreen, also known as wintergreen oil. An essential oil. It is distilled from the leaves of the wintergreen tree of the violet family. It is abundant in North America. It is a colorless or yellow (red when there are metal impurities such as iron) liquid with a strong smoky aroma and a sweet, spicy taste. The main component is methyl salicylate (up to 96-99%), along with thirty alkanes, ketones, alcohols and esters. It is used in pharmaceuticals, flavorings and soap fragrances. Commercially available wintergreen oil can be replaced with sweet birch oil, which is distilled from the bark of the sweet birch tree, family Birchaceae. Its quality is very similar to that of wintergreen oil, but it is not optically active.
